Stone, Timber and the Weight of Tradition

Rustic wine cellars draw on the oldest cellar traditions: stone walls, arched openings, heavy timber racking and iron hardware, arranged so the room feels as though it has always been part of the house. We have designed and built rustic wine cellars for private residences since 1995, manufacturing every rack and door in-house and engineering each room to hold the correct temperature and humidity behind the stone and wood.

TRUSTED BY

Our experience with high-caliber partners reflects our commitment to excellence and our ability to meet the exacting standards of High-end Residential Properties, Championship Golf & Country Clubs, Distinguished Hotels, Michelin Star Restaurants, Premier Casinos, Resorts, and Platinum Clubs of the World.

A rustic wine cellar is as much a room to spend time in as a place to store wine, which is why so many of ours include a tasting table.

CURATED RUSTIC WINE CELLARS

Rustic wine cellar design relies on texture and mass. Reclaimed or distressed wood racking, stone or brick walls, a barrel-vaulted or beamed ceiling and warm, low lighting give the room its character. Behind that character sits the same engineering as every cellar we build: vapor barrier, insulation, concealed cooling and a properly sealed door. The room looks old-world; it performs like new construction.

Stone and Brick Walls

Limestone, stacked stone or reclaimed brick set the character of a rustic cellar. We clad new or existing walls so the room reads as original to the house, with a full vapor barrier and insulation behind the finish.

Arched Entries

An arched opening with a solid-wood, iron-detailed door is the signature of the Tuscan and old-world cellar. Every door we build is sealed and insulated to hold the cellar climate.

Below-Grade Cellars

A basement is the natural home for a rustic cellar; the surrounding earth helps stabilize temperature. The same look is built above grade with the right wall assembly.

TUSCAN AND OLD-WORLD WINE CELLARS

Tuscan wine cellars are the most requested rustic style: limestone or stacked-stone walls, an arched entry, knotty alder or reclaimed oak racking and wrought-iron accents. Old-world cellars take the same elements further, with vaulted brick ceilings, flagstone floors and racking finished to look centuries old. Both pair naturally with a below-grade cellar, where the surrounding earth helps stabilize the climate, and both can be built above grade with the right wall assembly.

Our designers work from your drawings and finish samples so the stone, wood and iron in the cellar continue the materials already used in the home.

A rustic wine cellar is built to feel permanent. We design it to be exactly that.

ENVISION YOUR RUSTIC WINE CELLAR

Rustic Wine Cellar Design

Rustic wine cellar design begins with the walls and ceiling, because they set the character of the room before a single bottle is placed. Stone veneer, reclaimed brick or hand-troweled plaster is chosen first; racking is then drawn in a wood that sits well against it, most often knotty alder, reclaimed oak or hand-hewn fir, and finished to show grain and age. Display rows are placed at eye level, bulk storage below, with a tasting table or barrel-top where space allows. Lighting is kept warm and low: sconces, recessed accents along the racking and a single fixture over the table.

Basement Rustic Wine Cellars

A basement is the natural home for a rustic wine cellar. The surrounding earth moderates temperature, the lower ceiling suits a vaulted or beamed treatment, and existing foundation walls can be clad in stone to look original to the house. We design around mechanicals, posts and ceiling height so the finished room reads as intentional rather than carved out. Where there is no basement, the same look is achieved above grade with a full wall assembly and concealed cooling, and for a smaller footprint, an under-stairs cellar takes the same stone-and-timber treatment.

Rustic Wine Cellar Doors

The door sets the tone for a rustic wine cellar before anyone steps inside. Arched solid-wood doors in alder, oak or mahogany, with wrought-iron grilles, strap hinges and a forged handle, are the signature of the style. Behind the character, every door we build is fully sealed and insulated, because the door is as critical to holding the cellar climate as the cooling system is. Glass panels can be added to keep the collection visible from the adjoining room without giving up the rustic look. For a lighter, millwork-driven expression of the same craftsmanship, see our traditional wine cellars.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What defines a rustic wine cellar, and how we build one that performs as well as it looks.

What is a rustic wine cellar?

A rustic wine cellar uses stone, brick, heavy or reclaimed timber and iron hardware to create an old-world room, often with an arched entry, vaulted or beamed ceiling and a tasting table. The character is traditional; the climate control, insulation and door sealing behind it are modern.

What is the difference between a rustic and a Tuscan wine cellar?

Tuscan is one expression of rustic design: limestone or stacked-stone walls, an arched doorway, alder or oak racking and wrought iron. Rustic is the broader category and also covers old-world brick-vaulted cellars, mountain-lodge timber cellars and reclaimed-barnwood rooms.

Does a rustic wine cellar have to be in a basement?

No. A basement is the most natural location because the surrounding earth helps stabilize temperature, but rustic cellars are regularly built above grade and under stairs. The difference is in the wall assembly and cooling design, which we engineer for each location.

Which woods are used for rustic wine cellar racking?

Knotty alder, reclaimed oak, hand-hewn fir and mahogany are the most common choices. Each is hand-selected and finished in our own facility to show grain and age while remaining stable at cellar humidity.

What kind of door suits a rustic wine cellar?

An arched solid-wood door with wrought-iron accents is the signature. Every door we build is fully sealed and insulated so it holds the cellar climate, and glass panels can be added if you want the collection visible from the next room.
