Welcome to our weekly installment of "Wine Cellar of the Week"!
Ever wonder what you could do with that little, narrow storage room in your basement?! Have you just renovated your house and you finally have that dream bar set up? Why not add a wine cellar to that dream space! This is exactly what one of our clients dreamed of and that is exactly what he got.
We were approached by a gentleman from a city in Canada, which does not currently have a Certified Design Centre. He was originally working with another wine cellar company, but was unsuccessful in achieving his absolute perfect space. Needless to say, we welcomed him with open arms and an open mind! We were on a mission to give him the best wine cellar he could ever imagine.
Imagine the possibilities!

The client had a beautiful lower level with his very own bar! Next to this bar stood a tiny, unused, storage space that he desperately wanted to fill with something beautiful. As an avid wine collector, the client's first choice was without a doubt, a wine cellar. After being disappointed with his first attempt, we had our work cut out for us to make this not only the best wine cellar he's ever seen, but the best experience he's ever had. In conversations with the client, we came to the conclusion that an Architectural Series cellar was going to be the best fit for his tastes, his collecting style and his budget.

As the room was left in an unfinished state, we were more than happy to work one-on-one with their local contactor to finish the room preparation. This included advising and communicating on proper climate controlled environment requirements. With today's technology, the process and communication was effortless and much appreciated by client.

In the meantime, our design team was hard at work creating the client's dream wine cellar. And as with any design, there are always obstacles and challenges to overcome. Although being very narrow, that did not pose a problem for our team. What we did find interesting was the hidden trap door on the floor in one of the corners. While we couldn't very well place racking over top, we had to be creative....and luckily enough, that's our favourite thing to do!
How did we overcome this? Well, our beautiful horizontal bottle displays were the perfect solution (at least above counter) as this allowed us to place matched wood paneling on the wall beneath to create a seamless look to the cellar. As you can see in the photo below, the shallow horizontal bottle displays line the walls, resting effortlessly on a small countertop. Having only the wood paneling below left the floor wide open for access to the trap door. Genius!

As for the rest of the cellar, we kept it quite simple, but rather elegant I might add. Individual bottles are stored above counter as the loose bottles fill the slat bins below. Lighted angled bottle displays showcase the centre line of the cellar and truly draw your eye down the length of the room to the custom built humidor and to where we've installed a mirror to create even more depth. Suddenly, our client's tiny storage closet has become a haven for his wine collection!

This truly has become a special cellar in our hearts here at Genuwine Cellars.
